Age Requirements for Medicare Eligibility – Who Qualifies for Medicare?
The typical age requirement to be eligible for Medicare benefits is 65 years old, although certain individuals with special circumstances can qualify for the program at an earlier age. Examples of those who qualify before age 65 may include individuals who have qualified for Social Security disability benefits for at least the past 24 months, or those who have end stage renal disease (ESRD).
Raising the age of eligibility for Medicare to age 67 has been seriously discussed in the U.S. Congress since 2016. If such a change took place, it will most likely not affect those who are close in age to being eligible for Medicare, but instead would require those born 10-20 years later than someone eligible for Medicare today. You can read more about the 2016 discussion of raising the Eligibility age for Medicare mentioned here, on the Congressional Budget Office official website.
When Can You Apply for Medicare?
Most folks in Texas are under the impression that you have to wait until you turn 65 to enroll in Medicare. In fact though, you can sign up for Medicare 3 months before your 65th birthday. In addition to this, you can apply for Medicare on the month of your birthday or as late as the 3rd month after the month of your birthday. Sound complicated? It’s not – it’s relatively simple. You have 7 months total to apply for Medicare benefits – 3 months prior to your birth month, your birth month, and then 3 months after your birth month. Remember that even though you have 3 months after your birth month, you should sign up for Medicare part A as soon as possible (3 months before your 65th birth month).
